LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (PRWEB) November 17, 2017--The Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO) announces the creation of the Mary Pazdur Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice in Oncology. The annual award will be given to an APSHO member who consistently demonstrates exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions to clinical practice, research, or education in the hematology/oncology field.

Mary Pazdur, RN, MSN, spent her professional life as a nurse practitioner bettering the clinical care and outcomes of cancer patients, culminating in her career at the National Cancer Institute in the Laboratory of Tumor Immunology and Biology, working with patients on cancer vaccine protocols. She was also an early champion for the creation of the Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology (JADPRO), the premier publication for advanced practitioners and the official journal of APSHO.

Ms. Pazdur passed away from ovarian cancer in 2015. She had been married for 33 years to Dr. Richard Pazdur, the Director of the US Food and Drug Administration’s Oncology Center of Excellence.

“Mary was instrumental in helping refine the concept behind the creation of a journal written expressly by and for advanced practitioners,” said Jack Gentile, Chairman of Harborside, the journal’s publisher. “She helped us chart a course as we launched JADPRO, a brand-new journal that would speak specifically to the needs of this highly skilled, highly trained set of oncology professionals.”

“Advanced practitioners have a keen interest in helping improve the lives of patients with cancer,” commented Pamela Hallquist Viale, RN, MS, CNS, ANP, the Editor-in-Chief of JADPRO and the president of the APSHO Board of Directors. “This group is passionate about working toward improving patient care through high-level education. Mary’s vision for JADPRO, a journal that could deliver that advanced education, has been borne out as we enter our ninth year of publication, reaching nearly 10,000 readers each issue.”

Starting next month, ASPHO will begin accepting nominations for the inaugural award, which will be presented at the 2018 JADPRO Live at APSHO conference at the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Florida. The winner will receive an honorarium and an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2018 conference, as well as recognition at the meeting and in JADPRO.
